Record prices for heating oil and natural gas could make this winter brutal, regardless of the weather, according to the Federal Energy Information Administration. Northeastern homeowners who heat with oil could see their bills rise by as much as 30 percent. Despite horror stories about the steep rise in the cost of home heating fuels, there are many ways New Yorkers can save money on home heating this winter. Tame high winter energy bills- conserve! Here are some tips:
- Install triple-paned windows that have a high insulating value. Make sure that all the storm windows are down.
- Check for drafts under or around doors, replace the molding or install caulk where possible.
- Make sure that both fireplace and burner chimneys are clean, that the chimney dampers work properly and to close the damper after the fireplace has burned out. Fires in fireplaces usually result in a net heat loss because they draw in cold air from outside.
- Turn down the thermostat to 66-68 and wear an extra layer while in the house. Try heating just the actual family living areas. There are many good thermostats that allow for several temperate settings during the day or week.
Save money by having the furnace inspected every year. Late Fall is a good time, before the cold weather sets in. Then it will be working optimally to save energy, and face, it- it will be working! After all, no one wants to wake up on a winter day in a cold home!
While homeowners can't lower the price of heating fuel, now is a great time to practice energy conservation. Everyone can do something to avoid wasting fuel and help lower their energy costs.
The federal Energy Policy Act of 2005 offers tax incentives for energy upgrades that are worth considering. For those planning on upgrading their heating systems or even household appliances, look for the Energy Star label and purchase energy-efficiency you can bank on!
Next, walk around the foundation looking for cables and wires drilled into brick, shingle or vinyl siding. Be sure the holes are caulked. Also, inspect and seal any visible gaps around chimneys, furnace flues, plumbing pipes, ductwork, light fixtures, and attic soffits.
Attics should be insulated with the highest R-rating recommended. In the basement insulate hot-water pipes with inexpensive foam tubes, pre-slit to wrap almost any size pipe.
Chances are it is high time the thermostat in the main living area is upgraded to a programmable unit. Most homeowners can make this upgrade themselves. Program the thermostat to lower at night and during the day when the family is at school or work.
All light bulbs are not created equal either. Squeeze out more energy savings from lighting. Replace every incandescent bulb with compact fluorescents for up to 50%; energy savings. Install motion or light sensors on outdoor lighting so that it turns on only when needed.
Follow these energy-saving guidelines and take the sting out of higher energy costs this winter! |
